How do I measure meaningful connections at an event?
First define the term, then count it. A meaningful connection is one where both people opted in, at least one stated need was matched, the conversation happened face to face, and at least one side took a follow-up action. Anything that fails those four tests is a conversation, not a measurable connection.
What is a meaningful connection?
Most event reports use the phrase without defining it, which is why the number is never believed. Use a definition you can defend and apply the same way at every event. WITR uses four tests.
- 1Consent: both people opted in to being visible and contactable.
- 2Relevance: the connection matched a stated ask or offer, not just proximity.
- 3Contact: the two people actually met or exchanged details in the room.
- 4Action: at least one side saved the contact or took a follow-up step.
How do you count them without a survey?
| Test | Signal to capture | Captured when |
|---|---|---|
| Consent | Opt-in to the attendee list | At join, via the QR code |
| Relevance | Ask and offer matched by Smart Connections | During the event |
| Contact | Connection requested or accepted | During the event |
| Action | Contact saved, exported or followed up | During and just after the event |
What should you report?
- Meaningful connections in total, using your published definition
- Meaningful connections per attendee, so events of different sizes compare
- Share of attendees with at least one meaningful connection
- Share of stated asks that were matched to someone
- First-time attendees with at least one connection, a strong retention signal
- Cost per meaningful connection, for the budget conversation
Why the per-attendee number matters most
A big room will always produce a big total. The interesting number is how many useful conversations the average attendee had, and whether the quietest people in the room had any at all. That is the figure that predicts whether they come back, and it is the one that improves when attendees can see who is there and why before the coffee goes cold.
Frequently asked questions
Is a business card exchange a meaningful connection?
Not on its own. It fails the relevance and action tests, which is why card counts have never predicted follow-up.
Should I count connections that happened outside the platform?
Only if you can evidence them consistently. A mixed method that counts some conversations and not others produces a number nobody can compare.
How does WITR decide a connection is relevant?
Smart Connections compares each attendee's stated ask and offer with everyone else in the room and suggests specific people, with a reason for each suggestion.
Does the attendee data stay after the event?
Attendee-level data is anonymised after 48 hours. Aggregate event intelligence is retained so you can compare events over time.
